Everything public about the Mini 2 so far comes from Starlink firmware and configuration files, not from a SpaceX announcement. In July 2026, researcher Oleg Kutkov documented a new hardware target named mini2, and outlets including Notebookcheck, TechRadar and Tech Digest reported the details. Treat the list below as a leak, not a spec sheet.
Built-in battery
The Mini 2 firmware references a four-cell lithium battery managed by a BQ40-series battery-management chip. That is the same class of controller used in laptop packs, which suggests SpaceX is building proper charge balancing and thermal protection into the dish. Capacity has not been revealed. For context, four 18650 or 21700 cells typically land somewhere between 50 Wh and 75 Wh — enough for a couple of hours at the Mini’s real-world draw, but far less than a dedicated external pack.

USB-C Power Delivery charging
The leak points to USB-C PD input in the 11–24 V range, which lines up with how the current Mini already accepts power. Practically, that means the same USB-C PD batteries, car adapters and solar controllers that run a Mini today should also run and charge a Mini 2.
The trade-off: a lower transmit duty cycle
The most important detail is the transmit duty cycle dropping from 75% on the original Mini to 11% on the Mini 2, with a slightly lower average EIRP (27.4 dBW vs 27.57 dBW). Download speeds are expected to be unaffected, but sustained uploads — video calls, cloud backups, live streaming — will likely be slower. SpaceX appears to be trading upload headroom for battery life.

Our view: if you need internet off-grid this season, buy the current Mini. An external clip-on battery already solves the “no outlet” problem, and a clip-on pack is bigger, swappable and replaceable — three things an internal battery can never be. The one group with a reason to wait is casual users who will only ever run the dish for an hour or two at a time and value a single-piece kit over runtime.
