Just Got a Starlink Mini? 5 Accessories You Actually Need

The Mini ships with its kickstand and a wall power supply, which is perfect at home and useless the moment you leave an outlet behind. These are the five things that turn it into internet you can actually take anywhere, in the order most new owners should buy them.

  • 1 Battery
  • 2 Mount
  • 3 Car power
  • 4 Case
  • 5 A way to recharge

The short version: buy a battery first, because without one the Mini only works within reach of an outlet. Add a mount for where you use it most, a 12–24V adapter if it lives in a vehicle, and a case once it starts traveling. Everything else can wait until you know how you use it.

1. A battery: the one that makes the Mini portable

Ravion® Battery (158Wh) or Battery Lite (99Wh)

The Starlink Mini has no battery of its own. A clip-on pack attaches to the back of the dish, so there are no loose cables and no inverter.

  • 158Wh Ravion Battery: rated 6–9 hours in light use (about 4.5 hours at a steady 30W). Choose it for full days off-grid, RVs and boats. It flies carry-on only with airline approval (FAA 101–160Wh band).
  • 99Wh Battery Lite: rated 4–6 hours in light use (about 2.8 hours at a steady 30W). At 1.9 lbs it is the one to pick if you fly or hike, and it goes carry-on without airline approval.
  • How we calculate it: rated Wh × 0.85 (conversion losses) ÷ average watts. See the full runtime math →

On a budget? The PeakDo LinkPower 1 (99Wh, $159) adds a screen and app, but it has no weather rating.

2. A mount: match it to where the Mini lives

Pick one mount by surface

The kickstand is fine on a picnic table. Anywhere else, like a roof, a window or uneven ground, the dish tips, gets moved or ends up under a tree. A mount keeps it pointed at open sky.

  • Steel roof (car, truck, van, RV): Magnetic Mount, $78. It uses four magnets rated to 240 lbs of holding force, needs no drilling, and adjusts to a 20–30° angle.
  • Glass, fiberglass or smooth panels (boats, sunroofs): Suction Cup Mount, $58.
  • Campsites and ground setups: Tripod Stabilizer, $51. It lifts the dish above brush and vehicles.

Safety first: mount on a clean, flat surface, check the mount before every drive, and add a safety tether for highway speeds.

3. Car power: stop draining the battery on the road

If it rides in a vehicle

Ravion 12–24V DC Adapter

It plugs into any 12V or 24V socket in a car, truck, RV or boat. Because the Ravion batteries support pass-through charging, the pack keeps the Mini online while it recharges on the drive, so you arrive at camp with a full battery.

  • It skips the wasteful DC→AC→DC loop you get with an inverter and the stock wall supply.
  • It has built-in over-current, over-voltage and thermal protection.

Skip it if your Mini never goes in a vehicle.

4. A case: protect the dish between trips

Once it travels

It is a hard EVA shell with a waterproof zipper that keeps the battery, cables and small parts together, so nothing gets crushed in a gear bin or left at the last campsite.

5. A way to recharge off-grid

For multi-day trips

60W fast charger or 74W solar panel

Your battery is only as useful as your next recharge. At home, a dedicated charger gets you out the door faster. At camp, solar tops the pack up during the day.

  • 60W High-Speed Charger ($25): this is the official wall charger for the Ravion Battery.
  • 74W Solar Panel ($109): it recharges the battery at camp with no generator and no noise.

What you don't need yet

Often suggestedOur honest take
A big 1,000Wh power stationThis is overkill for the Mini alone. It is worth it only if you also run a fridge, laptops or CPAP. Compare the options →
A second batteryWait until you have done a few trips. Most people find that car charging covers the gap.
A generic phone power bankA 45W phone charger will reboot the Mini on its first upload burst. You need 100W USB-C PD or a purpose-built pack.
A permanent, drilled roof mountStart with magnetic or suction. Drill only once you know the Mini lives on that vehicle full-time.

New owner FAQ

What accessories do I need for a new Starlink Mini?

Start with a battery. Without one the Mini only works near an outlet. Then add a mount for where you use it, a 12–24V DC adapter if it lives in a vehicle, and a case for travel. A charger or solar panel matters once you go multi-day.

How long will a battery run my Starlink Mini?

A 99Wh pack is rated 4–6 hours in light use, or about 2.8 hours at a steady 30W. A 158Wh pack is rated 6–9 hours in light use, or about 4.5 hours at 30W. We estimate runtime as Wh × 0.85 ÷ average watts.

Can I fly with a Starlink Mini battery?

The 99Wh Battery Lite goes in carry-on with no airline approval needed. The 158Wh Ravion Battery can fly carry-on only with airline approval, because it falls in the FAA 101–160Wh band. Batteries never go in checked bags.

Can I power the Starlink Mini from my car?

Yes. A 12–24V DC adapter runs from the vehicle socket, and with a pass-through battery like the Ravion, the pack keeps the Mini online while it recharges on the drive.

Which mount should I buy?

Choose by surface. Pick magnetic for steel vehicle roofs, suction for glass, fiberglass and boats, and the tripod stabilizer for campsites and ground setups.

Build your Starlink Mini kit once. Use it every trip.
