Starlink Personal Maritime Plan vs Roam Unlimited: What Boaters Should Do Before Ocean Mode Triples on Sept 27

The Starlink Personal Maritime plan costs $185 a month, gives unlimited data within roughly 12 nautical miles of any coastline, and drops the 30-day limit on international travel that Roam Unlimited has. The catch: it only works on the water, only on private boats (the current terms say up to 60 ft), and anything farther offshore is billed through Ocean Mode, which goes from $2/GB to $6/GB for Roam Unlimited users on September 27, 2026. If you run a Starlink Mini on a boat, you have a few days to decide which plan fits and to make sure Ocean Mode isn't quietly running up a bill.

Here is what changed, what is still unclear, and a simple way to choose. We sell power and mounting gear for the Mini, not Starlink service, so we have no stake in which plan you pick.

What changed: the Starlink Personal Maritime plan in one minute

  • Price: $185/month, $10 more than Roam Unlimited ($175).
  • Coverage: unlimited data in territorial waters worldwide, about 12 nautical miles from shore.
  • No 30-day travel limit: Roam Unlimited caps international stays at 30 days per trip (down from 60 earlier this year). The Starlink Personal Maritime plan removes that limit, except where local rules require one.
  • Boats only: use on land is prohibited, and so is commercial use: no charters, ferries or fishing boats.
  • Size limit: Starlink first capped eligible boats at 40 ft, then raised it to 60 ft length overall in early September. The terms say "e.g.", so enforcement may vary.
  • Offshore: beyond territorial waters you need Ocean Mode at $6 per GB.
  • Sign-up: it does not appear on the normal plan selection page yet. Owners report getting it through a support ticket, and you need vessel documentation (registration or USCG documentation, hull ID, MMSI or call sign).

Sources: the plan was first reported by Mobile Internet Resource Center and Seabits. Starlink changes these terms often, so confirm the current wording in your Starlink account before you switch.

Ocean Mode triples to $6/GB: what that costs in real life

Ocean Mode is the pay-per-GB service for use beyond territorial waters. For Roam Unlimited customers it rises from $2/GB to $6/GB on September 27, 2026; Starlink Personal Maritime plan customers pay $6/GB from day one. Rough math at $6/GB:

  • Weather, email and messaging only (about 1 GB a day): about $6 a day.
  • A few video calls (about 5 GB a day): about $30 a day.
  • Streaming in the evening (10 GB or more a day): $60 a day and up.

The trap that costs people the most: Ocean Mode stays on and keeps billing until you switch it off in the Starlink app. It does not turn itself off when you come back into the harbor. Put a reminder on your phone for every return to shore.

Which plan should you pick?

  • You cruise the US coast and rarely leave the country: stay on Roam. You gain nothing from the Starlink Personal Maritime plan and you would lose land use.
  • You also use the Mini in an RV, a van or at home: stay on Roam Unlimited. The maritime plan forbids land use, which is a dealbreaker for mixed land and water setups. Our Starlink Roam plans guide explains the land-side rules.
  • You spend more than 30 days at a time in the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Mexico or further: this is exactly who the Starlink Personal Maritime plan is for. $10 a month more than Roam Unlimited is cheap compared with losing service mid-season.
  • You make long offshore passages: the plan choice matters less than your data habits, because both plans pay $6/GB out there. Download charts, weather files and entertainment before you leave.
  • Your boat is over 60 ft or used commercially: you are outside these consumer plans and need one of Starlink's business maritime plans.

The Starlink Personal Maritime plan is aimed at exactly the boats where the Mini shines: sailboats, catamarans and trawlers where deck space and battery capacity are limited. The Mini averages about 25–40 W, versus roughly 35–65 W reported for the Standard dish on boats. Running 24 hours at around 30 W is about 720 Wh, or roughly 60 Ah from a 12 V house bank. Our Starlink Mini power consumption guide has the full numbers.

Ravion suction cup battery mount for Starlink Mini on a fiberglass deck

Three things make a Mini setup reliable on the water:

  • Feed it from the house bank through a regulated DC adapter, not an inverter. Converting 12 V to AC and back wastes power. A 12–24 V DC adapter goes straight to the USB-C input.
  • Keep a weather-sealed battery on the dish for the dinghy, the beach or when the house bank is low. The Ravion Battery (158 Wh, IP65) clips onto the Mini and runs it 6–9 hours.
  • Mount it so it can't walk off in a swell. A suction cup mount holds on smooth fiberglass and gelcoat without drilling. Check it after every rough passage.

For the full setup, including salt spray, cable routing and where to put the dish, read our Starlink Mini for boats guide. If your dish reboots when the engine starts or the house bank sags, see why a Starlink Mini keeps rebooting.

Your checklist before September 27

  • Open the Starlink app and confirm Ocean Mode is off unless you are offshore right now.
  • Set a data usage alert so a forgotten Ocean Mode shows up in days, not on the monthly bill.
  • If you plan to stay abroad for more than 30 days this season, open a support ticket about the Starlink Personal Maritime plan now, and have your vessel documents ready.
  • If you use the Mini on land at all, stay on Roam Unlimited.
  • Download offline charts, weather routing files and entertainment before any passage beyond 12 nautical miles.

Frequently asked questions

$185 per month (before taxes), with unlimited data in territorial waters. Data beyond territorial waters is billed through Ocean Mode at $6 per GB.

Can I use the Personal Maritime plan on land?

No. The terms prohibit use on land. If you also use your dish in an RV or at home, Roam Unlimited is the better fit.

What is the boat size limit?

The terms currently mention boats up to 60 ft length overall, raised from 40 ft in early September 2026. Commercial and charter boats are excluded.

The published details don't list specific hardware. Plenty of boaters already run the Mini on Roam, but confirm with Starlink support when you apply.

When does Ocean Mode go up to $6/GB?

September 27, 2026 for Roam Unlimited customers. Personal Maritime customers pay $6/GB from the start.
